Walking with a Ghost, by Tegan and Sara

How to play: Watch the video and practice
How to sing: Read the lyrics and do what Sara says, make your voice sound “a bit like a chipmunk and a bit like Cindy Lauper”

Skill level required: Easy/Moderate

Here’s a reference performance with the Tegan and Sara to help you get in the groove:

And here, Sara Quin tells you how she does it. The chords are F# minor, D major, E major in the verse. The chorus is down a perfect fourth – C# minor, A major, B major. If you’re not yet dexterous enough to play this on an acoustic guitar, it’ll be even easier on an electric.
Just so you have your rock trivia straight, and just so you don’t think I’m the only person who thought about going electric with this – this song was also covered very successfully by The White Stripes. In this, it sounds like Jack White is playing power chords at the 9th, 5th and 7th frets with the root on the A string in the verse and the same pattern with the roots on the E string in the chorus.

Once you get the original version, and possibly the White Stripes version, down, it might be fun to experiment with different voicings and extensions of the basic chords. For example, you could play F# minor 7 at the second fret, D Major 7/F# at the second fret, and an open E major. Here’s a demonstration:

LYRICS

No matter which way you go
No matter which way you stay
You’re out of my mind, out of my mind
Out of my mind, out of my mind

I was walking with a ghost
I said please, please don’t insist
I was walking with a ghost
I said please, please don’t insist

No matter which way you go
No matter which way you stay
You’re out of my mind, out of my mind
Out of my mind, out of my mind

I was walking with a ghost
I said please, please don’t insist
I was walking with a ghost
I said please, please don’t insist

No matter which way you go
No matter which way you stay
You’re out of my mind, out of my mind
Out of my mind, out of my mind

I was walking with a ghost
I was walking with a ghost

Out of my mind, out of my mind
(I said please)
Out of my mind, out of my mind
(I said please)

You’re out of my mind, out of my mind
Out of my mind, out of my mind
Out of my mind, out of my mind
Out of my mind, out of my mind

I was walking with a ghost
I was walking with a ghost
I was walking with a ghost
I was walking with a ghost
I was walking with a ghost
I was walking with a ghost
