Monday, April 25th, 2011 – 8PM
Speakeasy under Local 121, Providence, RI
The kick-off of the spring/summer tour schedule of folk troubador Chris Pureka. An enthusiastic, packed-house gathered to give the gift of their attention – and they were rewarded with a soulful set of music that kept their eyes on the front of the room.
I’d been invited by a friend and was unfamiliar with her sound… not being one to reinvent the wheel, I’ll tell you that I whole heartedly agree with this outstanding quote on her web site bio page:
“Folky sorrowful songs of loneliness and hurt, longing to reunite. Her tunes have the grave Appalachian flavor of Neil Young and Gillian Welch; her guitar playing is subdued but quietly virtuosic. And her voice can be a desolate whisper or a bitter accusation. There’s no comfort, for her, in the clarity of her observations.” – John Pareles, THE NEW YORK TIMES.
