Real as Radiation: Nicole Reynolds

Who: Nicole Reynolds
When the Magic Happened: Monday, April 25th, 2011
Speakeasy under Local 121, Providence, RI
She was the opening act for Chris Pureka, and I didn’t know anything about her at all. Nicole Reynolds. She was milling about the dark but glamorous basement venue, pint sized, modest and humbly dressed. Her voice on the mic quiets to room to take in the surpising, high, girlish sounds that narrate engaging lyrics.
It seemed at first that she might be terrified of the audience or that she might be shy – but when I asked her about this after her performance she said, “No. I’m just awkward.” True, maybe – later I realized that you can even see her earnest facial expressions captured in the video below. Her presentation to the crowd is somehow more intimate because of her awkwardness – there only seems to be a genuine person standing there. She is sharing with you, she is not selling it to you. Is there anything more humble and genuine than a woman who recorded three albums while working on an organic sheep farm? She’s a the real deal – and artist exploring her past and present with an open mind and an open heart. It’s captivating to watch and listen to her.
